In June of 2008, the Human and Spiritual Values Committee undertook a new project to focus on the people that make up the membership of the Hastings Kiwanis Club. An already vibrant and thriving club, the goal of this program is to further the camaraderie. Each month a member is chosen to be in the Kiwanis spotlight and the committee "plunges" into their past. During a weekly meeting, Les Harms, committee chair, gives us a witty presentation of little known facts about the current month's Kiwanian as the membership attempts to figure out who the special member is and "gets to know your Kiwanian"!

SEPTEMBER October 16, 2008
Our Kiwanian for September is the oldest of four children and was born
in Ames, Iowa. The earliest experience I could find about this person, was
going with her parents to a popcorn stand operated by her parents before she was
three years old. She moved to Hastings at the age of three (3), and
attended Morton Elementary through the fourth grade. At this time, her parents
moved to the country and she attended a one-room rural school during which she
sometimes had only one other person in her grade. Our Kiwanian was active
in several 4-H clubs doing sewing, cooking, dairy cattle, beef cattle as well as
horses. Her horse's name was Brownie during her 4-H experiences. She
also was active in Girl Scouts and a highlight of this experience was attending
camp in Johnson City, Tennessee. Hastings High School followed with our
Kiwanian being active in Pep Club and Drama Club. Following high school
graduation, our Kiwanian attended both Bellevue University and the University of
Nebraska. Her favorite holiday is Halloween since her birthday falls very
close to the holiday. She enjoys reading about history, she is a member of
the D.A.R., and she enjoys good cinnamon rolls, and is active in her church.
She is the mother of three children, and a grandmother of five; plus she enjoys
the distinction of having both her father and a son within our group.
